A quilt consisting of different blocks demonstrating separate patterns or techniques, often completed as a means of teaching new quilters how to construct traditional blocks. In the 1800’s it was customary for a young girl to complete a sampler quilt prior to marriage to demonstrate she was capable of sewing for what would be her new family. Samplers of many kinds were commonplace in one-room schoolhouses.
